September 2008

Welcome to our Winter email newsletter. "Hey", I hear you cry, "It's not winter!" but with the summer we've had so far, it might as well be don't you agree?

With the credit crunch seeming to keep the pressure on businesses, now might be the ideal time to review your customer and or supply contracts. Often we can help tighten things up or look at ways to save you money so if you are interested please do get in touch.

There have been a couple of interesting employment related stories this month, one that relates to the impending deadline for the new Points Based System for immigration. If you have non-EU or Swiss Nationals working for you, make sure you keep up to date on this subject. The other employment story is a horrible one regarding a recent case that found an employer to be liable for a work-related suicide. May this never happen to you.

Not so much news, but I wanted to highlight one particular article on our website regarding what to do if you find false claims on a CV. This was highlighted earlier this year when Lee McQueen won "The Apprentice" despite making false claims on his CV. It is worth reading through this article.

Lastly, in the times of rising fuel prices I'd like to bring two things to your attention. First is the increase in VAT you can recover on fuel used for business purposes and secondly is The Pipeline Card. This is a scheme where over 500,000 have "banded together" and the organisers are trying to negotiate a discount with a major petrol retailer. No success yet, but who knows, they might just pull it off.

The Funny Bit
cookies Lastly, I wanted to bring something to your attention. The BBC reported earlier this summer that four out of five UK businesses believe the type of biscuit they serve to potential clients could clinch the deal or make it crumble, so a survey from the Holiday Inn hotel chain said. In particular the survey said that Lawyers were most impressed by good boardroom biccies. So, if you have a favourite biscuit for when you next come and see us, please let me know!
