£35,000 for Serious Leg Injury

A freelance screen engineer who suffered serious leg injuries after being hit by a crane has been awarded £35,000 in compensation.

Paul Bowling, 35, was working at Chester race course dismantling a large video screen. Each section of the large steel structure was put into a pile so that it could then be moved by a crane.

When the crane started moving, it hit a perimeter fence, which caused the beam to swing. Mr Bowling was unable to get out of the way in time and was knocked to the ground.

Mr Bowling suffered fractures to his knee and ankle and had to have two operations. He has been left with restricted movement and doctors think it likely that he will have to have a complete knee replacement in the future.

Since the accident Mr Bowling has been unable to return to work as a screen engineer and has had to take an office-based job instead.

Mr Bowling brought a claim for personal injury. He contended that checks should have been carried out to ensure that the crane driver was competent. At the time of the accident, there had been a catalogue of safety failures. The workers were not given a health and safety briefing, as is normal at the start of a job of this kind. Also, the steel structures were not properly secured before the attempt to move them.

Compensation for Mr Bowling's injury was agreed at £35,000.
