£4,750 for HGV Driver Whose Hand Was Crushed by Bin

Compensation has been obtained for an HGV driver whose hand was crushed by a large metal bin while he was collecting household waste.

The bin's wheels were stiff and the driver and his colleagues had to push it in order to move it towards his vehicle. As they did so, it suddenly moved forward and the driver's right hand was crushed between it and the vehicle. For a while after the accident, he needed help from his family with household tasks.

He sought compensation from his employer, which initially denied liability. A medical report was obtained from an orthopaedic surgeon, who confirmed that the driver had suffered a crushing injury to his hand, with associated laceration.

His employer then made an offer of £4,000 to settle his claim. Further negotiations led to an increased offer of £4,750 being made, which the driver accepted.
