£750,000 for Holidaymaker Who Contracted Salmonella

A man who was left with ongoing complications after contracting Salmonella while on a package holiday has obtained substantial damages.

The man was on holiday in the Dominican Republic when he fell ill, experiencing stomach cramps, vomiting and loss of appetite. After returning to the UK, he felt increasingly unwell and suffered from swelling in his leg. He was admitted to hospital and was diagnosed with Salmonella septic arthritis in his knee.

He suffered ongoing health problems and restricted mobility, and underwent a knee replacement. He had to take early retirement and depended on his family for assistance.

After he sought legal advice, evidence was obtained from a number of medical experts. It was established that, because of his knee problems, he would eventually require a home with a ground-floor bedroom and bathroom.

The package holiday provider denied liability for his injuries but, following negotiations, a settlement of £750,000 was agreed. The damages will allow him to buy a suitable home and equipment to improve his quality of life.
