A soldier whose career in the Army was cut short after he suffered a non-freezing cold injury (NFCI) has obtained a six-figure settlement.
He was exposed to cold and wet conditions during basic training. He was only issued with standard kit, despite more suitable equipment that could have prevented his injury being available. He was subsequently diagnosed with an NFCI. NFCIs occur when body tissues are exposed to cold, wet conditions for long periods of time, damaging nerves and blood vessels.
Despite his diagnosis, he was required to carry out duties in similar weather, which exacerbated his condition. His injury ultimately led to him being discharged on medical grounds.
He continues to experience symptoms. His condition limits his ability to perform outdoor activities and has also restricted his career opportunities.
After he sought compensation for his injuries, his claim was settled for £300,000.
