Pedestrian Hit by Falling Shop Sign Wins £61,000

A woman has won £61,000 in an out-of-court settlement after she was hit by a falling shop sign.

The East London woman, who is in her 40s, was walking down the street when part of the metal sign fell off the shop front, hitting her head, leg and back. She was taken into the shop, where she was attended to until an ambulance arrived.

She was kept in hospital overnight before being discharged the next day. She had suffered soft tissue damage to her spine, lacerations to her leg and injuries to her head. She experienced migraine-like symptoms and blurred vision in the days following the accident, and continued to suffer from headaches and dizziness over the next two months. She also found it difficult to concentrate and noticed that her short-term memory was affected.

The woman continues to experience severe pains in her neck and back, as well as panic attacks, sleeplessness and exhaustion. Despite being a dedicated teacher, she is now only able to teach part-time.

When a personal injury claim was brought, liability was admitted and it was settled for £61,000.
