Woman Who Slipped in Supermarket Secures £60,000 Damages

Compensation has been obtained for a woman who was seriously injured when she slipped on a wet floor in a supermarket.

No signs had been put in place to warn shoppers that the floor in an aisle of the supermarket was wet. The 60-year-old woman, who worked as a self-employed hairdresser, fractured her right kneecap when she slipped on the floor and fell.

She was admitted to hospital and underwent an operation to repair the damage to her knee. Further surgery was later carried out to remove the metalwork inserted during the initial operation. She has been left with scarring and has a high risk of needing a knee replacement in the future.

She brought a claim against the supermarket, which admitted liability. However, negotiations failed to progress and court proceedings were commenced. A settlement of £60,000 was subsequently agreed.

As well as compensating her for her loss of earnings, her damages also include sums for future medical costs, such as cosmetic treatments and makeup to cover the scarring on her knee, and the costs of travel for medical treatment. The settlement also reflects the care provided by her husband.
